Porsche 914 & 914/6 License Plate Lamps & Lenses

"License and Registration, Please"

Not surprisingly, all Porsche 914 or Porsche 914/6 vehicles left their respective factories with lamps meant to illuminate rear license plates. These twin lights changed completely between the end of the 1974 and beginning of the 1975 model years as described below. This change accomodated the redesign of the rear bumper to which bothe the license plate and the corresponding lamps are attached... sort of.

1970 - 1974 Porsche 914 & 914/6 License Plate Lamps

The rear license plate illumination on the 1970-1974 Porsche 914 and all 914/6 cars is provided by twin Hella lamps that mount to the rubber "cap" strip that runs the length of the rear bumper. The lights, part numbers 914 631 601 00, are mounted via two screws into the portion of the bumper cap that is suspended over the license plate cutout, thereby providing direct, downward inllumination.  These earlier lamps are NLA and getting increasingly difficult to find. Despite frequently being advertised as such (for some unknown reason), they are not the same as the trunk light.

1975 - 1976 Porsche 914 License Plate Lamps

Illumination lamps on 1975-1976 Porsche 914 vehicles are mounted to the rear bumper on each side of the license plate. These later versions, part numbers 911 631 620 04, are redesigned to perform from this different position. As indicated by the part number, the same lights are used in the Porsche 911 models of the time period.
